Fabric & Cutting Requirements & Materials Needed:

* 7” X 9” Pellon Insul-Fleece, batting, or waterproof sheet
* 2” X ½ wof – 1 print (will be used for decorative strips)
* 2” X 7” – 6 different prints (I used binding ends when I put the original mug rug together)
* Thread to match fabrics
* 1/4 yd. print...base and binding…first cut a 7” X 9” base piece & then cut 1 – 2 ¼” strip for binding (you will need at least 34” to bind the mug rug)
* 4 1/2” X 10” print...pocket
* 3” X 10” print...pocket
* ½” X 4” green rick rack – flower stem
* Scrap print...appliqué
* Scrap fusible bonding

Use ¼” seam allowances unless otherwise instructed.

Before you start you will need to cut either a 7” X 9” piece of Pellon Insul-Fleece, which is waterproof, a piece of batting or I cut a piece from a waterproof sheet that I bought.  If you want the rug to be waterproof, I would recommend either the Insul-Fleece or the waterproof sheet.  

Take your 2” strips and press them in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.  Your 2” X ½ wof, press in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and cut 2 – 7” lengths.  Lay your 7” X 9” base piece (right side down), your inner product, whatever you chose, and lay the first folded strip at the top along the 7” edge of the piece and stitch ¼” along the raw edge.  The second strip overlaps the stitching of the first strip, either laying it straight or you can offset it at a diagonal, as shown on the photo.  Layer the next 6 consecutive strips as you have started, either overlapping straight or on a diagonal, alternating them back and forth.  You should have 8 strips sewn on, the first and last being the same fabric. 

PROCEED WITH POCKET & FLOWER APPLIQUE

The body should be cut out of batting and we had 2 Muzzles on there.  The one on the bottom should say "Back-Grey Print".

The mustache is not a separate piece to eliminate bulk.If using a light table, you may want to make a copy of your layout or trace the beard and mustache onto a different piece of paper so you can’t see the colored photo on the cover through the paper. Place the layout on the light table and place your applique over the top of the layout. Using a disappearing quilter’s pen, draw in the detail lines that need to be stitched. I drew in the mustache on the beard before I assembled the applique. You can wait until the entire applique is assembled before you do this process, or draw lines on each piece before you put it all together.

Step 4:

4. Lay bandana pieces right sides together and pin.  Using a ¼” seam, stitch around 4 sides of the bandana but not across the top edge.  Trim corners and point and turn to the outside, gently poking your corners and point out with the tip of your scissors.  Press seams flat. 

After you turn the collar cover & before you stitch the collar casing you will want to stitch a buttonhole into the collar to allow the D-ring to come through to attach the leash.  Measure the length of your D-ring and sew the buttonhole that length into the center of the collar casing as shown on bandana illustrations.  You will want to keep in mind which way you are turning the casing to make sure you put the buttonhole in the correct placement.  If you want the cover to be reversible, place a buttonhole on both sides of the casing. 

3. Block Sashing/First Border:Using your 5 - 35” strips, sew the 4 sets of blocks together.  Next, take your last 2 strips and sew an 8" piece onto each one. Trim seam and press flat. Cut these pieces to 50" a strip to each side.Press seams flat.
